Compass Group Southern Africa (Compass Group SA), the country’s largest food-service company, lays great stress on ensuring a safe and healthy environment in all its operations.
It is a strategy that has made it a leader in health, safety and environment (HSE) practices; one ensuring that safety starts within its own “home” – the production kitchen.
Reflecting this hubris, the food-services company will be rolling out an internal safety awareness campaign during the upcoming three-day week to coincide with World Day for Safety and Health at Work on Thursday, 28 April 2011.
Compass Group SA emphasises the importance of HSE practices in all it does – to the extent that it has instituted international health and safety best practice at all its catering divisions.
The theme of the campaign, “knowing the difference between hazards and risks”, will be reflected in the following initiatives:
- Day one: Toolbox Talks to create awareness;
- Day two: Word game as a means to explain and expand on the differences between hazards and risks; and
- Day three: Identify typical hazards and risks that one is faced with in a kitchen.
Unit managers at each catering site will manage the campaign amongst their catering staff so that Compass Group SA remains on top of HSE in the industry.
Riëtte Venter, Compass Group SA’s Director of HSE, says that the group follows a strict and integrated HSE risk management system that is endorsed by legal compliance, ISO standards and industry best practice.
By rolling out the educational campaign, the Compass Group SA HSE department aims to increase safety awareness in the workplace, empower its staff to identify and reduce incidents in the workplace, while promoting a safe working environment.
“As we have a national responsibility to those who work for us and those we serve every day, HSE practices form the foundation of Compass Group SA; one whereby we strive for safety first in everything we do,” says Venter.
